One of the most unusual in the world is Les Passagers (The Passengers), a French vertical street theater created in 1988 by director Philippe Rue and actress Christine Bernard.
This unique theater has no real stage, curtain or auditorium. City buildings, bridges, large parks and squares, tower cranes, historical and architectural monuments, industrial dumps, abandoned factories and plants are used for the productions. In plays, the stage is a large vertical surface. Scaffolding, various pyramids, ropes, cables, and nets become part of the scenery during a performance.
Today, the company has 20 artists who come from various fields: visual arts, dance projects, music groups, circus shows, video art.
The work is supported by the French Ministry of Culture, as well as in cooperation with Layher, Seigneurie, RERO. Artists perform in cities in Europe and Asia, the U.S., Brazil, and their performances have gained worldwide fame and popularity.
“Cosmogonia is one of the theater’s most famous performances, which is a vertical aerial show on the theme of creation, consisting of 12 paintings.
The performance “Time is…” – A show based on China’s rich cultural history, on the theme of seasons and the passing of time. It was first staged on the Greenwich Peninsula in London in 2008 and the stage was chosen as the covered stadium of the O2 Arena. Some Chinese experts were brought in to create the project. Choreographer Sinman Yue helped adapt the dance portion, renowned artist Huang Yang was involved in the design of the thematic murals, and RaphaelWang was responsible for creating the martial arts scenes.
“Passengers” is the most unusual and dangerous theater in the world, whose performances include elements of circus arts, pantomime, acrobatics and modern dance, giving the impression that people can fly. Unfortunately, in Russia you don’t get to see these performances very often, but you can enjoy the reckless antics of the artists by watching videos of the performances on the Internet.
